What Does “You Are Called by Name” Mean?
Eight days after Jesus was born, Mary and Joseph named Him Jesus, just as the angel had told them before He was born.
His name wasn’t chosen randomly. God had already given Him His name and His purpose.
Later, Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord. They continued doing what God had asked them to do, faithfully caring for the child He had entrusted to them.
Names help us know one another personally. When someone calls you by your name, you know they aren’t simply talking to anybody—they’re talking to you.
Throughout the Bible, we see that God knows people personally. He knows more than the names other people call us. He knows who we are, what we feel, what we’re afraid of, what makes us happy, and what we need.
You are not simply one person among billions to God.
He knows you.
And just as Jesus had a purpose, your life matters too. You don’t have to be like someone else to be important to God. You can grow into the person He created you to be.

Take It With You
You Are Called by Name reminds us that God doesn’t see us as part of a crowd.
He knows each of us personally.
There may be times when you feel unnoticed or wonder whether you matter. Remember that God sees you, knows you, and loves you.
You don’t have to earn His attention.
For little ones, the whole story can be remembered in one simple sentence:
“God knows my name, and I matter to Him.”
