What Does “Protected by God” Mean?
After the wise men left, Joseph received another message from God in a dream.
Danger was coming.
An angel warned Joseph that King Herod wanted to harm Jesus and told him to take Mary and Jesus and flee to Egypt.
Joseph listened.
He didn’t wait until morning or argue about whether the journey would be convenient. He got up during the night, took his family, and left.
God’s protection didn’t mean that danger didn’t exist. It meant God knew what was happening and showed Joseph what to do.
That’s important for us to understand too.
Trusting God doesn’t mean that nothing difficult or frightening will ever happen. Sometimes God’s protection looks like giving us wisdom, sending someone to help us, warning us away from something dangerous, or giving us courage to make a difficult choice.
And sometimes we won’t understand what God is doing at all.
But we can remember that God sees what we cannot see.

When we’re afraid, we can ask God for help, wisdom, courage, and protection.
For little ones, the whole story can be remembered in one simple sentence:
“God is with me when I am afraid.”
